The Backbencher Pub and Café is well known around town as a great place to meet for an after work drink and a bite to eat. With an across the street view of parliament buildings and grounds, you’ll be able to see what the leaders of the country are getting up to.
One thing that sets the Backbencher Pub and Café apart from other restaurants in Wellington is the satirical political themed menus (The B.B. Dining Amendment Act) and unique puppetry mounted on the walls; two to mention are Helen Clark and Don Brash.
Open for lunch and dinner every day of the week, the delicious meals are both locally and internationally influenced. The large range of local and imported beers and the extensive wine lists are designed to accompany your culinary experience perfectly.
The Backbencher is available for small and large private functions. We are able to cater to all your needs – from a special occasion to corporate lunch to an important conference or seminar. We have a variety of menu selections; from finger food to a la carte, or try their special BBQ menu. There is also an Alfresco dining area with a private bar and a number of function rooms available for hire.
The Backbencher was restored in 1990 with the most recent additions being an espresso bar and the bottle shop ‘Cellar-vate’. The shop includes a three and a half meter high wine rack boasting fabulous wines from New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the USA. Take your time to find the perfect bottle of wine - it’s easy and fun to look around the wine selection on the moveable staircase. If you need a little help, the friendly Cellar-vate team really know their wines and will be happy to give advice.
